Gideon Northwood

Gideon Northwood is a formidable presence in the town of Ravenville, Washington, standing 6 foot 2 inches with a disciplined crew cut and a sharp, medium build. A Spokane native and a retired U.S. Postal Inspector, Gideon possesses a dual-edged gift for investigation: a photographic memory and an extraordinary, heightened sense of smell that allows him to detect nuances others miss. This technical precision extends to his personality; as a blunt ambivert with a dry wit and a touch of OCD, he navigates the world with a Duncan yo-yo in his pocket, a relic of his high school championship days that he uses to focus his thoughts. By his side is Watson, a loyal six-year-old Doberman Pinscher and trained tracker who serves as both a fierce protector and a friendly companion.

When he isn’t out in his customized 1983 Jeep Dispatcher or his sleek 1938 SS Jaguar, Gideon is a true connoisseur of the detective arts. His wardrobe is a constant tribute to his icons, consisting of cargo pants/shorts, black Skechers, and shirts featuring Sherlock Holmes or Miss Marple. This passion is reflected in his professional life as a rare book and stamp appraiser, where he curates a world-class collection that includes a signed manuscript of The Sign of the Four and a first edition of The Murder at the Vicarage. His evenings are a sophisticated blend of old-world charm and modern skill; he is remarkably tech-savvy, often spending his nights enjoying a glass of fine wine and a Britbox mystery or a great historical mystery fiction book set to the backdrop of classical music.

Gideon's Supporting Cast

Miss Wicker:

Elizabeth or Liz as she likes to be called is a 78 year old woman that is very active, she was born 1948 on July 25. She was born in Port Townsend, Washington, she moved to Ravenville about 15 years ago. She stands at  5’3”. Though she was small in stature, Liz had a compact, sturdy build that suggested years of hard work. At around 140 pounds, she wasn't 'frail' in the way people expected a woman in her late seventies to be; there was a deceptive strength in her calves and a briskness to her step that made her five-foot-three frame seem to take up much more space in the room. She does yoga and Tai chi to keep in shape and she does word searches for her mind. The more complicated the better. She  was an insurance fraud investigator for 30 years before she retired and became a widow, her deceased husband Gus owned multiple insurance companies on the West Coast, that's how they met when he first was starting out in the company. He then bought the company and expanded it. When he died she sold the company for millions. She and deceased husband Gus were coin collectors. Her father was one of the biggest oil tycoons on the West Coast. And when he died she inherited the company.

She always wears women boater hats and buys Lilysilk products and has a few Portland Leather purses. She has short grey hair and a very nice smile.

She doesn't have any children. She has a brown female Dachshund named Noodle. She is 3 years old and very well trained. She listens and obeys very well and is very friendly to other dogs.

She lives in a 55+ condo apartment complex in Ravenville. It's a three bedroom condo. She has an office and small library. She is an avid reader of all things history and also does word searches.

Father Glass:

Steven Glass or Father Glass to his parish and the community. Father Glass has been the priest at St. Raphael the Wayfarer and lives at the rectory, he's only been the priest there for a few months. Father Glass was the priest at a different church in Idaho for a few years until the former priest of St. Raphael died of old age. The church itself is located in Ravenville in Washington State. All the stories take place in the modern era. Father Glass is 34 with an old soul and is 5’5”. He possesses a solid, broad-shouldered frame that feels as immovable as the stone steps of St. Raphael the Wayfarer church. He isn't a man of wasted movement; his stocky, barrel-chested build gives him a grounded presence, suggesting a hidden strength beneath his well-pressed clerical black suit.

His most distinguishing feature is a thick mane of wavy, copper-red hair that catches the pale Washington sunlight, contrasting sharply against his fair, often stoic complexion. His face is rounded but carries the weight of a man who sees more than he says—his expression is one of disciplined calm, though his blue eyes, which are considered the rarest, remain sharp and highly observant of his surroundings.

Father Glass always wears a Chicago Cubs hat. He always wears just a black Clerical Waistcoat with white neckband shirt under it with a Roman Collar and single-breasted jacket, black slacks and black leather boots. When it's winter and he's wearing his waistcoat he wears a heavy black full-length overcoat. Sometimes he also wears a traditional black Cassock with a Roman Collar, if he is wearing his cassock in the winter he wears a black greca coat.

His family owns the local funeral home in Ravenville, he became a priest when he was of age. He is very polite, understanding, determined, disciplined and observant.

Father Glass likes to read Ernest Hemingway and Jack London and many other types of books including some mystery novels. Father Glass doesn't drink but he does love his coffee and good food. He was a huge baseball fan, especially of the Chicago Cubs and listened to them on the radio or TV when they were on. Father Glass listened to various old-time radio programs and read the newspapers from Ravenville, Spokane and USA Today newspaper.

Detective Jackson Teller:

Detective Jackson Teller has been on the Spokane Police Force for close to 20 years. He is a

stocky man in his mid-forties standing at 5'10" with a solid frame that hints at years of physical work. His graying hair is neatly trimmed, and a thick mustache framed his upper lip. He is always dressed in a three-piece business suit along with wearing a Aquascutum trench coat in the "Kingsway" style, just like Humphrey Bogart. He had the demeanor of a man who had seen too much and trusted too little.

He likes Gideon as a person but doesn't like that he gets himself involved in his investigations. He has helped him once before on a murder case. They have worked together a few times when Gideon worked as postal inspector and was in Spokane on some type of case a few times. He has helped him once before on a murder case.

Malcolm Miles

Malcolm is a 45 year old black man who stands 7 feet tall. He was a former  basketball player and legend at Whitworth University. He was the all-time leader in points, rebounds. Gideon had no idea who he was because he doesn't follow sports at all. Malcolm had the potential to make the NBA but never did. Because of that he got hooked on drugs and alcohol and became homeless. He has been sober for a few years and Gideon now gives them money for information.
